BIO
Hiroya Kurata (b. 1980, Japan) earned his BFA from Parsons School of Design in 2003 and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Having spent his early childhood in both Japan and the United States, Kurata draws inspiration from the cultures of both countries. His work merges the aesthetics of Japanese youth culture with the representational sensibilities of Western painters such as Fairfield Porter, Charles Burchfield, and Lois Dodd, exploring the quiet beauty of everyday life.
In addition to his painting practice, Kurata has worked in the field of art conservation for over fifteen years. His hands-on experience with historically significant artworks has deepened his understanding of art history and materiality, enriching his approach to painting.
